Registered members are those people who can log into an account on Greystones Sailing Club member’s area. Greystones Sailing Club does not collect personal data other than that which is provided to us via this member’s area and our contact form.

Greystones Sailing Club utilises social media channels and application such as WhatsApp for the purposes of updating members, promoting events and news and general public relations.

There are a number of privacy issues with WhatsApp when used in an a Club capacity and in cases where anonymity and privacy is paramount we are therefore advising against its use for communicating with members and/or transferring data such as images, videos, results etc.  This is absolutely the case for younger members or children for the reasons outlined below. Use or engagement with Greystones Sailing Club via these channels assumes acceptance of these terms.

These issues relate to data protection concerns, but also other concerns from a Club’s perspective.

Firstly, if a WhatsApp group is set up, everyone in that group has their name, phone number and possibly profile photograph (if they have one), shared with everyone else in the group.

Secondly, the lack of auditing ability the Club has over a WhatsApp group is an issue. This is an issue for a number of reasons outside of GDPR and data protection also. For example, if a member in a WhatsApp group were to post unsuitable material to the WhatsApp group, and then leave the group, the Greystones Sailing Club administrators of the group have no means or mechanism to remove such material.  The same can also be the case on Social media channels where Greystones Sailing Club have no means of editing or removing comments or materials posted by 3rd parties.

This lack of auditing ability also makes it difficult to comply with a Subject Access Request or request for deletion if one were received.
